Manufacturing Brass Shavings for Terrazzo Floors

Manufacturing Brass Shaving for the Terrazzo Floors at the Charlotte Douglas International Airport

At the Charlotte Douglas International Airport, Concord Terrazzo Company supplied all the materials to install the terrazzo floor design for the Concourse A Phase II expansion. In this blog post, we wanted to demonstrate the boundless customization possibilities of terrazzo through our manufacturing of brass shaving to create a shimmering ribbon design for the Wright Brothers’ exhibit.

Research and Development: Finding an Aggregate Solution

Recognizing the need for metallic brilliance that adds to the ribbon designs and pairs well with bronze casted medallions, Concord Terrazzo Company developed a new aggregate in-house – a form of brass shavings. The process involved testing and refinement to ensure the shavings were compatible with epoxy terrazzo, and met the design intent.

Through rounds of sample creations, we were able to achieve the exact shimmering gold effect the designs envisioned. The Charlotte Douglas International Airport terrazzo design is truly remarkable, set apart from what is considered conventional to other terrazzo installations.

The Ribbon Design: A Tribute to Aviation History

When you travel through Concourse A at the Charlotte Douglas International Airport, you will come across a terrazzo design that honors the Wright Brothers. Part of this design includes plaques featuring key moments in the Wright Brothers’s history. Connecting each plaque is a ribbon design that flows seamlessly through the Concourse, and shows an accurate length of the distances of each of the four powered flights. The brass shavings are seen all through the ribbon design adding depth and luster.

Metallic effects in terrazzo floors

The terrazzo floor at the Charlotte Douglas International Airport is more than just a durable, low maintenance flooring solution – its a testament to the creative potential of terrazzo. By using brass shavings, the terrazzo floors show a golden effect that draws the attention of travelers and leaves a lasting impression.

Ultimately, architects and designers can explore innovative aggregate choices. This ability to select from a wide range of material showcases terrazzo as one of the most creative flooring solutions around.

Epoxy Terrazzo: Innovative Materials

Epoxy terrazzo allows for plenty of flexibility when it comes to incorporating aggregates. Traditionally, marble and granite chips are used in terrazzo floors. With epoxy terrazzo, there are more options to consider including glass, mirror, shells and other decorative aggregates. Each material can create interesting visual and textures through various combinations, adding character and uniqueness to a project.

Metal Shavings

Designers have the freedom to experiment with other materials for a terrazzo floor. Brass and Zinc shavings are possible options for a terrazzo floor. Check out the appearance of zinc shavings used in a terrazzo design:
