Upcycling Glass Aggregate into Architectural Signage

Upcycling Glass Aggregates into Architectural Signage

Let’s take a look at the world of upcycling. Today, we’re taking a closer look at how companies are finding new ways to repurpose glass waste into something extraordinary. Just like with terrazzo flooring, where crushed glass can transform a space, this same recycled material is making its mark in a surprising place: Architectural Signage

One such project is Exist Green, Omaha’s first zero-waste boutique. Their storefront sign, crafted using our crushed glass aggregates, exemplifies how recycled materials can offer eco-friendly solutions for businesses committed to sustainability.

Client Spotlight: Exist Green

Exist Green provides a range of eco-conscious products to the Omaha community, including reusable household items and bulk food options that reduce packaging waste.  In 2019, when Exist Green needed a storefront sign, the owner reached out to Concord Terrazzo Company to find a solution that aligned with the business’s zero-waste values.

By choosing TERRAZZCO Auto Green Glass and Clear Plate Glass, Exist Green achieved something truly special:

  • A Distinctive Look: The crushed glass aggregates create a vibrant, textured effect, making the sign a standout feature of the storefront. Unlike traditional plastic or metal signs, this one holds onto its color and uniqueness for years to come, keeping it eye-catching and fresh.
  • Environmental Responsibility:  By using recycled glass, the sign helped reduce the need for new raw materials, contributing to a circular economy. It’s a small step, but it’s one that adds up to make a big difference.

How We Turn Glass Waste into High-Value Products

At Concord Terrazzo Company, we love taking something discarded and giving it new life. By repurposing glass waste, we create materials that can be used in a variety of applications—from flooring to signage, and even countertops. Let’s take a look at how the process works:

  1. Sourcing: Most of our glass comes from within 300 miles of our headquarters in Charlotte, North Carolina. We collect everything from post-industrial and post-consumer bottles to windshields and glass containers, to crush.
  2. Crushing & Processing: Using a crusher, we produce several grades of crushed glass, ranging from fine powders to standard-sized aggregates.
  3. Packaging & Distribution: Once processed, the glass aggregates are packaged in 50-pound bags and shipped in bulk to support a wide range of applications, including terrazzo flooring, countertops, landscaping, and architectural elements.

The Beauty of Glass Aggregates

The beauty of glass is that it shines. Once a discarded bottle or windshield, these crushed glass pieces now shimmer in the sunlight, creating an eye-catching, colorful display wherever they’re used. The vibrant hues not only enhance the aesthetics of a design but also highlight the potential of upcycled materials in sustainable projects.
